-Triage of damaged trees (storm damage, dropped limbs or other failures) to determine whether the tree remains viable, whether there are any residual safety issues, and any pruning or management needed in the aftermath.

Basic maintenance can be performed at the time of inspection or written recommendations or specifications prepared for more involved works, where needed. It pays to get independent advice before contracting expensive works. Formal assessments and reports are more detailed and involve written documentation.

You may need a formal arborist report if you wish to:

-Remove, substantially trim, or impact the immediate environment of protected trees (e.g., indigenous trees; large urban trees)

-Conduct development activities where trees are present (includes subdivision, construction, demolition, installation of utilities, or land uses (e.g., events) where approval is required)

-Record the safety profile of managed trees along with mitigation recommendations

-Obtain formal advice on any tree matters.

  • Ever wondered what species of tree you have, or whether your trees are a species protected by conservation or planning laws? Correct species identification is always the first step in making appropriate legal, maintenance and management decisions as each species has a unique set of characteristics, lifespan, and issues. For example, Desert Ash is considered an invasive, problem species while the Claret Ash is not. Likewise, Swamp Sheoak has invasive roots and suckers, while the similar River Oak is considered a beneficial tree.

Old Growth is happy to inspect and identify trees with a verbal or written report and provides formal identification services for species that need further investigation or need to be keyed out to confirm identification. Dr Guerin has a PhD in plant taxonomy and former experience as an identification botanist at a state herbarium and for Old Growth has compiled a database of over 200 tree species commonly cultivated in the greater Adelaide region. Some groups, such as cultivars or morphologically similar species in the Cupressaceae and some ornamental eucalypts that are less common in cultivation require more detailed identifications using a range of vegetative and reproductive characters.

  • -Formative pruning to guide growth and avoid future problems and growth defects such as crossed branches, poor branching patterns for light capture, double-leaders, weak attachments, included-bark etc.

    -Corrective pruning

-Canopy lift to provide clearance for pedestrian or vehicle access whilst preserving the shape and future health of the tree.

-Clearance pruning (driveways, parking spaces, buildings) that preserves the natural growth and shape of the tree

    -Pruning specifications

  • -Health monitoring

-Management (nutrition, disease, water, soil compaction, site access, pruning) and plans

-Enhancing limb retrenchment to renew crown

-Palliative care – managing tree health and risk throughout natural senescence
